History & Origin
As the name of the Boston Terrier already reveals, this small dog breed comes from the USA. His ancestors are composed of Old White Terriers and English Bulldogs, the terrier portion of the Boston Terrier is recognizable primarily by the name. Around the city of Boston, the small dogs were formerly used as well for show dog fighting, as once the English Bulldog. However, at that time, the Boston Terriers were taller and stockier than they are today and more similar to their ancestors in stature. It is believed that the present appearance of the Boston Terrier was created by crossing in French Bulldogs. It was not until the late 19th century, in 1893, that the breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club, although its original name "American Bull Terrier" was officially changed to "Boston Terrier" to avoid confusion with the English Bull Terrier. The new naming took place in honor of the dogs' first breed club, which was founded in Boston and has its headquarters there.

Essence of the Boston Terrier

The little Boston Terrier is a gentleman to kneel down. Attentive and friendly, he accompanies his people through everyday life and would like to be part of everything. Although the sensitive Boston loves the closeness to his human being, he will never be a pure lap dog - in his heart he is a very big man, who bravely encounters his surroundings and is always inspired by his active temperament. He is nevertheless also extremely adaptable and is suitable as a quiet companion in the city as well as cheeky play and sports buddy for various activities. Thus, the versatile power pack knows how to excite in active dog sports, such as flyball or agility, as well as in the obedience ring or as a relaxed therapy dog.

Attitude and Education

Sensitive Boston is attentive and eager to learn. They respond to the slightest response - hard drill is totally unsuitable to educate the gentle dogs. Consequence and fun practicing together, however, quickly lead to success, because the intelligent dogs learn very fast. The proximity to his human pack is very important to him, while he is happy about each joint activity and makes in just about everything enthusiastically. Be it dog sports, hikes, little tricks, walks or even just a cozy round on the couch - if he is with his man, little Boston is happy. Nevertheless, his Terrier heritage has left him with a fairly active temperament, which should be regularly satisfied by his people through sufficient employment. Then the little Boston is a very pleasant and quiet roommate, who also gives a very good partner for children. As a pure kennel dog the open-minded dog comes in - for this he is absolutely unsuitable.

useful information

The weight and size differences within the breed are enormous - from 25 to 40 cm withers or between about 6 and 11 kg, the Boston Terrier comes in very different forms. This big difference arises from the different weight classes in which the dogs are divided: the lower class tolerates, for example, dogs up to about 6.8 kg and the higher class those up to 11.3 kg. However, these "weight classes" are not taken into account in breeders or in competitions, there are more features such as the proportions of the dog, the general appearance or the essence is crucial.
